Musical Crossroads: Greek Melodies Across Cultures

The concert features melodies that either originated in Greece and became famous internationally, or were imported with Greek lyrics. The program includes music of the Bob Dylan, Goran Bregović, Angelo Branduardi, Mikis Theodorakis, Nickelback, and Candan Erçetin. Verses will be sung in English, Greek, Italian, Serbian, and Turkish.

Concert Tribute to Lina Nikolakopoulou

Lina Nikolakopoulou is one of the most renowned Greek lyricists, having written over 400 songs in the past four decades. She has collaborated with several important composers and singers from Greece and beyond. In order to honor Nikolakopoulou and her impact on advancing Greek culture throughout the world, a concert at Princeton University will be presented to celebrate her most enduring works and significant musical collaborations. The performance will be at 4PM on Sunday, March 1st, 2015 in the Taplin Auditorium. Nikolakopoulou will fly from Greece to be present at the event. Led by recording artist and composer Nikos Kouroupakis, the concert will also feature Aphrodite Daniel, Yanna Katsagiorgi, and Nikitas Tampakis ’14 as vocalists. The band will be performing under the direction of acclaimed composer and guitarist, Spiros Exaras. Princeton student musicians will open the concert.

A Selection of Greek Songs Α-Ω

Martha Frintzila is based in Athens, Greece. She has worked on a diverse range of projects including theatre and music performance direction, chorus coordination and music advising. With a commitment to research and theatrical experimentation, she has made various innovative productions of Ancient Greek Drama as well as of classical and modern international theatre. Frintzila is a founding member of Kratiras Arts Space and the founder of Baumstrasse Studio, a multi-purpose space of theatrical and musical research with a specialization in Ancient Greek Drama. Dedicated to teaching, she regularly gives lectures and seminars on various topics about theatre and singing, in Greece and abroad. Martha is the director of “Dromos me Dentra” theatre group and an Acting teacher at the National Theatre of Greece. She is the leading singer in the “Kubara Project” and “Stacy” Bands. As a singer and actress she has performed in festivals and concerts in Europe, USA, China, the Middle East and Cuba.

Concert Announcement! New Greek Songs: Cycles in Tradition

We are excited to announce our upcoming concert New Greek Songs: Cycles in Tradition. This concert will take place at Princeton University in Taplin Auditorium on Sunday, November 16th at 4PM. Featuring Princeton student performers, the program will present contemporary Greek music in dialogue with tradition. We hope that you will be able to join us as we explore how folklore travels and becomes recontextualized via modern popular song. The ensemble consists of the more traditional Pontian Lyra, touberleki, and trichordo bouzouki along with brass, electric bass, piano, and string instruments. Elena Toumaras and Nick Kampouris will join our group as guest artists.

Monday Night Greek Table @ Forbes!

Yesterday was the first meeting of the newest of three weekly Modern Greek tables! Post-doctoral fellow Charis Tsampouras hosted the Modern Greek Table at Forbes, which meets at 6PM on Mondays over dinner in the Forbes Dining Hall. The other Greek Tables meet on Wednesdays at 6PM in the Rocky dining hall and Fridays at 1PM in the Mathey dining hall.

Musical Crossroads 2013: Greek Melodies Across Cultures

A great time was had by all at the Musical Crossroads concert held in the Hamilton Murray Theater on November 22. The program featured popular Greek songs which have also been performed in other languages outside of Greece, ranging from traditional folk to modern laiko. The 200-seat theater was filled with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and community members. Here is a clip featuring some concert highlights:
